The Center for Distance and Online Learning (CDOL) provides educators, students and non-profit agencies with a unique combination of technology-enhanced content and services. Developing technology-enhanced learning solutions to facilitate professional development and student learning, CDOL provides the expertise needed to fully integrate technology with content. TeachStar Online Academy ...
Innovative Courses Courses guide teachers through sustained professional development content anytime, anywhere. Led by certified teachers, courses build understanding of research-based theory and effective teaching strategies. Throughout each course week, teachers discuss course concepts and online resources with peers, encouraging collegial sharing in learning communities. Academic Integrity and Relevance Skilled K-12 educators in mathematics, language arts and reading create the Academy's curriculum. Faculty hold Master's or Doctoral degrees and have taught in Los Angeles County classrooms. Instructor-Led The instructor-led online courses feature multimedia lessons, standards-based professional development, extensive Web-based instructional resources, lessons delivered via broadband or CD-ROM, an orientation module, weekly lessons and activities and instructional materials for the classroom. Instructors are content experts, trained and certified by the Center for Distance and Online Learning. Multimedia Web Environment Most courses include video, audio, animated instructional activities, Web links and online discussions. Academy Help Desk A technology Help Desk staff assists teachers when technical questions arise. Credit Available All TeachStar Online Academy courses offer optional CEUs, Graduate Education Units, Professional Development Credit or Salary Point Credits (LAUSD teachers only).
VPSS ...
VPSS is a state-approved advanced certification process by which teachers in "special settings" have an additional option to become compliant with No Child Left Behind legislation. VPSS combines subject matter coursework from an accredited college or university and professional development that is intensive and focused on the subject matter content specified in the California standards, frameworks and Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) subject matter assessments. The specifications for the professional development component cover content aligned to the CTC Subject Matter Requirements (SMRs) and thus the content of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) Single Subject Examinations, the California Core Academic Standards, the CAHSEE and the CSTs. The professional development incorporates theory and practice, is organized in two levels, and meets the NCLB criteria for high quality professional development. The duration of the modules is designed to meet the need for sufficient intensity of the training.
TEAMS Distance Learning ...
TEAMS Distance Learning (TEAMS) received its initial funding in 1990 by the U.S. Department of Education's Star Schools grants, to provide live, direct student instruction and ongoing professional development for teachers via satellite broadcasts throughout the United States. In addition to its original satellite delivery, TEAMS programs are telecast on a number of Public Broadcasting Stations (PBS) around the country. Created to deliver K-8 mathematics and science instruction, TEAMS has grown over the years to include K-8 instructional programs in language arts/reading, science, history/social science and technology. Due to advances and increased access of technology in the classroom, TEAMS has evolved into delivering its K-8 programs as videotape modules. Modules include use of extensive teacher supported materials accessible via the Web. TEAMS modules can be purchased/licensed by schools, districts, regions, PBS and Instructional Television (ITV) agencies. Additionally, schools and districts can now purchase TEAMS programs via streamed media over the Internet through a subscription service from Discovery Education (formally AIMS Media/Digital Curriculum.)
