Seventy-four Los Angeles County middle and high schools have been named California Gold Ribbon Schools, the state’s top honor.

“These terrific schools are leading the way in embracing our new rigorous academic standards and showing others how to help students succeed on their way to 21st century careers and college,” said State Superintendent Tom Torlakson in announcing the winners on April 18.

The local schools are among 275 statewide to be honored in the award program created in place of the California Distinguished Schools program, which is on hiatus while the state creates new assessment, accountability and continuous improvement systems.
