Mark Keppel High School pushed past its competition to win the 2014 Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon team title, county education officials announced Feb. 12.

The Alhambra Unified School District's Mark Keppel High School team won the decathlon with a tally of 46,723.70 points (out of a possible 65,400) with South Pasadena High School finishing a close second with 46,687.40 points.

By winning the LACAD, Mark Keppel automatically advances to the California Academic Decathlon scheduled for March 20-23 in Sacramento. But because their scores were high enough to qualify as statewide "wild-card" entrants, South Pasadena, Redondo Union, Beverly Hills, West (Torrance), South (Torrance), Alhambra, Edgewood (West Covina), Torrance, Burbank, El Rancho (Pico Rivera) and West Ranch (Stevenson Ranch) have also won slots in the state contest. (See attached full list of team scores.)

The 2014 LACAD results were announced by Los Angeles County Office of Education Superintendent Arturo Delgado in ceremonies held at the Quiet Cannon Country Club in Montebello. Nearly 500 students from 55 teams, which included 13 practice squads, participated in the decathlon that is annually presented by LACOE.

"We hear a lot about what's wrong with public education, but here today, in this room, we can all see what's right with public education," Delgado said. "I appreciate the special commitment from so many districts, from superintendents and school boards, to support the Academic Decathlon despite all the financial pressures we're all experiencing."

The top-scoring athlete was Daniel Wang from West High School, who tallied 8,911.40 points (out of a possible 10,000). He was followed by Luke Murphy from Redondo Union High School, who totaled 8,473.30 points, and Bonnie Lam from Alhambra High School, who tallied 8,294.60 points.

The LACAD competition, which this year focused on the study theme of World War I, took place Jan. 25 at El Rancho High School and Feb. 1 at the University of Southern California. The LACAD is open to public high schools in the county that are outside of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which holds a separate Academic Decathlon competition and awards ceremony.

The Academic Decathlon is a county/state/national honors program designed to promote self-assurance, academic enrichment and teamwork among students from a diversity of academic backgrounds.

Decathlon teams are comprised of students from all grade-point averages. Decathletes are challenged to use analytical skills, performance abilities and test-taking and writing aptitude in 10 subjects: Art, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language & Literature, Math, Music, Social Science, Speech and Science with the Super Quiz testing all areas at once.

The winning team at LACAD, along with top-scoring squads that qualified as "wild card" entrants, will participate in the California Academic Decathlon scheduled for March 20 and 23 in Sacramento. The winning team at state advances to the U.S. Academic Decathlon in April 24-26 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
