The LACOE Aloha Ukulele Ensemble held an informal mini concert to pay tribute to the nation's war veterans on Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day.
The show was held at the California Credit Union location on the LACOE campus. Performers, led by Student Support Services Director Victor Thompson, performed "You're a Grand Old Flag," "God Bless America" and "Stand By Me."
"We strive to spread the Aloha spirit throughout LACOE," Thompson said.
As an early Thanksgiving treat for staff, the ensemble also performed songs at the Head Start office in Santa Fe Springs on Nov. 19.
The group has started preparing for their Holiday concert on Dec. 15 at 12 noon at the Personnel Commission office. The musical event is sponsored by the Employee Assistance Services for Education.
The LACOE Aloha Ukulele Ensemble is sponsored by the National Pacific Islander Education Network and was adopted by EASE as a program that promotes wellness and helps employees reduce stress through music.
The musical group was born two years ago after performing at the annual Asian Pacific Heritage Luncheon. It aims to share Pacific Islander music and culture with staff, Thompson said. Pacific Islanders include the people of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji and the Maori people of New Zealand.
