Larry Levis' poem "Make a Law So That the Spine Remembers Wings" clinched the top spot for Miriam Sachs in the 9th Annual L.A. County Poetry Out Loud contest held Feb. 4 at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.
She set the stage by reciting C.K. Williams' poem "The Gaffe" and won first place, topping 13 other competing students from throughout the county. Sachs attends Mira Costa High School in the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.
"In a world where technology advances and digital media afford us many ways to communicate, the eloquence of the spoken word cannot be silenced," said event volunteer Michele Biagioni. "It is captivating to listen to Poetry Out Loud participants recite poems they have chosen."
LACOE organized Poetry Out Loud in partnership with the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
