This is a 3-day event.

NOTE: A district or organization team should include one district level administrator or designee. Please include teachers and coaches who have in-depth knowledge of NGSS.  This training does not provide the Foundations for NGSS.

The November 2018 State Board Meeting resulted in the approval of 29 K-8 Science Instructional Materials.  It is now under local control of each district or organization to determine what is the right "fit" for their students.

The NGSS Toolkit for Instructional Materials Evaluation (TIME) has been developed under the collaboration of the statewide partners and their associates.  This intensive training is unlike any other content toolkit in which this requires participants to have the following foundationalk knowledge:

  • Philosophy and Understanding of the 3-Dimensions of NGSS
  • Knowledge and experience with the use of Conceptual Flows and 5E Lesson Planning
  • Understanding of the use of a Phenomenon Based Inquiry approach
California’s statewide NGSS Collaborative developed an instructional materials adoption toolkit based on the Next Gen TIME toolkit developed by Achieve, BSCS and the K-12 Alliance/WestEd. Modifications include California specific concerns (such as the inclusion of Environmental Principles and Concepts). This provides districts with the tools and knowledge to conduct a deeper analysis of instructional materials to ensure their student and program needs are being met through the instructional materials. The State Board of Education (SBE) adopted list provides a starting point of programs that have met the SBE adopted criteria which focused on standards and alignment to the CA Science Framework. The CA NGSS TIME toolkit will not only help districts conduct an in-depth review but will also help districts become better versed in NGSS as they carefully consider instructional materials for adoption to meet their district's needs. County level leadership teams will be learning the toolkit in December and will begin working with districts as early as January.
The Collaborative is made up of representatives from:
  • California County Superintendents Educational Services Association
  • California Department of Education
  • California Science Project
  • California Science Teachers Association
  • K-12 Alliance @ WestEd
