It is common for people who have experienced tragedy to have strong emotional reactions.

When you face the realities of life, you feel extremely vulnerable and powerless. Initially, you feel only shock and numbness, “This can’t be true”! You imagine waking from a nightmare. You experience grief. You wonder what is going on, “Why”?

Understanding responses to distressing events can help you cope effectively. Practice some of these tips to guide you along the path:

  • Recognize that this is a challenging time
  • Allow yourself to mourn

  • Take a news break

Communicate your experience. Express what you are feeling in whatever ways feel comfortable to you — such as talking with family or close friends.

While we may not be able to control what happens to us, we can control how we handle crisis. People react differently to stressful situations.
