Treniece Monè Ward, a senior at Hamilton High School (LAUSD), is the winner of this year’s Los Angeles County Poetry Out Loud competition.
Ward impressed the judges with her recitation of “Discrimination” by Kenneth Rexroth and “gravity furnace” by francine j. harris.
She moves on to compete in the California Poetry Out Loud event set for March 10-11 in Sacramento. The national finals in Washington, D.C. take place April 30.
The runner-up was Lola Jamin, a junior at Immaculate Heart High School.
LACOE’s Curriculum and Instructional Services Division organizes the annual poetry recitation contest for high school students in partnership with the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
This year’s contest, held Feb. 7 at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, involved 18 students from public and private schools around the county.
