New School Dashboard Released; Data Provides Snapshot of Students' Progress Since Before Pandemic

The Dashboard reflects data from the 21-22 school year when the effects of the pandemic and related quarantines were in full swing and had a major effect on the attendance rates at all schools.
Today, the California Department of Education (CDE) released the 2022 Dashboard which establishes a new baseline of data following the COVID-19 pandemic. The California School Dashboard provides parents, educators and the public with meaningful information on school and district progress.
For the past two school years, California accountability requirements were waived or adjusted due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students and the education community. Beginning with the 2021–22 school year, the requirements to publish the Dashboard resumed. Due to the restrictions imposed by Assembly Bill 130, California is required to report only current year data (or Status) for the 2022 Dashboard. Therefore, unlike in prior years, the 2022 Dashboard will not display the difference from prior year (also known as Change) or performance level colors (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue). Results will fall into one of five Status levels, ranging from “Very High” to “Very Low (cell Phone Bars, color purple).
“The California Dashboard data release establishes a new baseline of data highlighting student outcomes for the first time since before the pandemic,” said Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo. “As county offices, the Dashboard is one of the most helpful tools that we use to assist school communities in identifying areas of improvement. It is an important snapshot of our students' progress that allows us to continue with our commitment to student learning and wellbeing with a focus on equitable opportunities.”
The collection of Dashboard indicators, which include both state and local indicators, provides a more comprehensive picture of the impact on conditions of learning, students’ academic, engagement, and social emotional needs. The Dashboard reflects data from the 21-22 school year when the effects of the pandemic and related quarantines were in full swing and had a major effect on the attendance rates at all schools. However, the Dashboard data alone does not describe the full picture of how districts and schools work closely with families and other educational partners to build asset-based relationships and provide interventions that support the development of all students.
A Dashboard is produced for each district, and its individual schools; it is one of the most helpful tools that County offices use to assist LEAs in identifying areas in need of improvement. Like the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessment data, the release of the 2022 Dashboard is not the first time that Local Education Agencies (LEAs) are seeing their student data. County offices and districts were aware of much of what the data would be prior to the statewide release and are focused on identifying strategies that support a whole child approach.
The Los Angeles County Office of Education provides tools and resources to support LEAs with closing opportunity and achievement gaps. LACOE provides tiered assistance to all LEAs with a focus on Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) that address the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional/mental health needs of all students. Some key components of MTSS include universal screening of all students, academic and social emotional interventions, data collection and continual assessment, and parent involvement. LACOE offers hundreds of hours of technical assistance and professional development to support school districts with robust teaching strategies, interventions and supports.
