Dr. Debra Duardo, the Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools, delivered an inspiring commencement address to the graduates of the College of Education at Cal State LA. The ceremony took place on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the Commencement Pavilion and marked a significant milestone in the students’ lives. 

Congratulating the graduates on their achievements, Dr. Duardo urged them to reflect on their personal journeys and the support they received. Sharing her own story as a daughter of Mexican immigrants, a high school dropout, and a former teen mother, she emphasized the transformative power of education and the role of educators in shaping lives. With a bachelor's degree, a master's in social work, and a doctorate in education, Dr. Duardo expressed gratitude for the path that led her to public education, emphasizing the vital role schools and public education played in creating opportunities for herself, her children, and her family. 

Being an educator, she explained, is not just a profession but a calling that requires passion, commitment and continuous growth. The graduates were encouraged to inspire their students as lifelong learners and help them discover their passions and talents. 

As role models, educators have the power to positively influence students through their words and actions. Despite the evolving education landscape and societal challenges, Dr. Duardo expressed confidence in the graduates’ ability to prepare the next generation for a rapidly changing world. 

She reminded the graduates that they are part of a global community dedicated to providing quality education for all. With unwavering dedication, she urged them to embrace the opportunity to make a difference, one student at a time. 

“Be unapologetic in your fight for equity and justice and make sure that every single person you serve knows that they have a space, that they belong and that they are entitled to the best quality life possible,” Dr. Duardo exclaimed.  

The commencement ceremony concluded with resounding applause as the graduates prepared to embark on their journeys as educators, carrying the inspiration and guidance of Dr. Debra Duardo with them.
