The California Department of Education has released the 2023 California School Dashboard, offering a comprehensive look at how schools are performing across the state.

The Dashboard provides data on six state measures: chronic absenteeism, suspension rate, English learner progress, graduation rate, college and career readiness, English language arts, and mathematics.

The performance levels are determined using current year and prior year data and are represented by a color ranging from red, orange, yellow, green to blue. Red represents the lowest performance level, yellow is the midway level and blue represents the highest performance level. The color-coding system affects how schools are eligible for additional assistance.

Key findings from the 2023 California School Dashboard include:

·       Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of school days without a valid excuse, dropped from 30% in 2021-2022 to 24.3% in 2022-2023.

·       The statewide graduation rate for the Class of 2023 was 86.2%, which is higher than pre-pandemic levels. However, it is a slight drop from 87% in 2022, which provided accommodations designed to support students most impacted by COVID-19.

·       466 school districts and County Offices of Education (COE) are eligible for differentiated assistance in 2023, compared with 617 in 2022.

·       In LA County, 45 school districts are eligible for differentiated assistance in 2023, compared with 63 in 2022.

·       48.7% of English language learners are making progress towards English language proficiency.

“This is encouraging news—and our work is not complete,” said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. “We have made an unprecedented investment in services that address the needs of the whole child. We can see that those efforts are paying off, but this is only the beginning.”

“To help our educators and students, we remain committed to offering comprehensive support to our local educational agencies, targeted interventions, and equitable access to resources to empower them to tailor their approaches to individual student needs,” said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools.

The 2023 California School Dashboard allows users to explore results by school, district, and student group. The Dashboard is a resource for parents, educators, and communities to gauge the effectiveness of our education system.
