During their trip, the students met with U.S. Senator Alex Padilla

Last month, 18 students from LACOE’s Migrant Education program (MEP), children of seasonal farmworkers, went on an unforgettable educational journey to Washington, D.C., as part of the Migrant Education Civics program in partnership with the Close Up Foundation.

Led by MEP coordinator Jackie Lopez and Dr. Janet Alonso, the students had the opportunity to meet with U.S. Senator Alex Padilla. During their visit, the students expressed their gratitude for the Senator’s leadership and advocacy, and shared personal stories that underscored the importance of continued support for migrant education initiatives.

The group was able to take a commemorative photo with Senator Padilla, marking a powerful moment of civic engagement and representation for California’s migrant youth.

This visit helped deepen the students’ understanding of government and public service and empowered them to raise their voices on behalf of their communities. It was a proud moment for LACOE and a testament to the transformative impact of educational access and advocacy.
