L.A. County’s English Language Arts and Math scores have reached and surpassed pre-pandemic (2019) proficiency levels for the first time since statewide testing resumed in 2022.
Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) recognizes the remarkable academic gains made by students across Los Angeles County, as reflected in the latest California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results for the 2024–25 school year. This year’s data shows a strong upward trend in student achievement in English language arts (ELA), mathematics and science.
Across the State, the report highlights meaningful gains in proficiency rates, with a 1.8-percentage-point increase of students meeting or exceeding the standard in ELA, a 1.8-percentage-point increase in Mathematics and 2.0-percentage-point increase in Science. These gains reflect the tireless and collective efforts of educators, students and families, and signal a promising shift toward post-pandemic recovery and academic excellence.
Across the County, we’ve seen notable improvements in proficiency rates, with 50.5% of students meeting or exceeding the standard in ELA and 39.3% in Mathematics, both surpassing statewide averages of 48.8% and 37.3%, respectively. These gains represent year-over-year increases of +2.4 percentage points in ELA and +2.8 points in Mathematics, outpacing statewide growth of +1.8 points in both subjects.
“This year’s results are a powerful reflection of the resilience and determination of our students, educators and school communities. As we celebrate these hard-earned gains, we remain deeply committed to advancing educational equity, supporting student wellbeing and strengthening instructional excellence,” said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools. “I extend my gratitude to our amazing L.A.
