A student-driven capstone project at IPoly High School has earned LACOE one of California’s highest honors in education.

The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) has received a 2025 Golden Bell Award from the California School Boards Association (CSBA) for International Polytechnic High School’s (IPoly) Senior Capstone Project, a yearlong civic engagement initiative that empowers every senior to take meaningful action in their community.

The award, presented Dec. 3, recognizes IPoly’s student-centered approach to civic learning. Through the Senior Capstone Project, all seniors identify a real-world issue, research solutions, collaborate with community organizations or civic leaders, and implement an actionable project. For the past two years, 100% of seniors have earned the California State Seal of Civic Engagement as a result of their work.

“We are deeply honored to receive a Golden Bell Award for IPoly High School’s Senior Capstone Project,” said Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo. “This award is not just a recognition of a program, it’s a celebration of student voice, civic action and educational equity. IPoly’s Senior Capstone Project stands as proof that when students are empowered to engage with the world, they lead it forward.”

The Golden Bell Award highlights the shared commitment between LACOE and IPoly to preparing students to be informed and engaged civic participants. Throughout the year, educators and community partners guide students as they select an issue, conduct research, design a plan and collaborate with agencies and nonprofits to create meaningful change. The interdisciplinary effort aligns with LACOE’s mission to prepare students for college, career and participation in a thriving democracy.

IPoly’s model provides structured research support, mentorship and access to civic leaders, while maintaining a strong emphasis on student ownership. Seniors present their findings through public symposiums, panels and community events, giving youth a platform to share their perspectives and advocate for solutions.

The CSBA Golden Bell Awards honor educational programs across California that demonstrate innovation, address evolving student needs and exemplify strong school board leadership.
