Discover how Glazier Elementary's innovative use of COVID-19 grants fosters student growth, well-being, and community engagement through the thriving Glazier Garden project.

LACOE partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) to award dozens of School COVID-19 Prevention Partnership (SCPP) Grants to teachers, schools and school districts to fund projects that address the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on student outcomes.

The Glazier Garden at Anna M. Glazier Elementary involves the entire school community of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, including current staff, former teachers, parents and students. The Glazier Garden is used to support the students' academic writing as students keep a journal of gardening projects. Students also use technology in their lessons to photograph, upload, sort, display and recall pictures of the things that have grown in the garden.

The Glazier Scholars were well-versed in speaking to the content of their work. During LACOE's visit to their Feast of the Garden, students served as Host Gardeners, extending a warm welcome and sharing their knowledge of the various plants in the garden. They were also well organized, as each student had assigned duties and rotated through those jobs with the skill of a professional team. The Glazier Scholars were able to explain the required maintenance of the garden, the harvesting process, and the methods they used to prepare the fresh vegetables that they tended from their garden. Parents, retired teachers and the administration served as Host Servers for the Feast of the Garden. Glazier Elementary has undoubtedly set the mark for how the COVID-19 grant can and should be used to promote a healthy lifestyle.
