Students from across Los Angeles County gathered to showcase their mathematical mastery at LACOE's annual Math Field Day.

The Los Angeles County Office of Education’s (LACOE) 41st annual Math Field Day welcomed more than 450 students from grades 4 - 11 across 114 registered teams in 27 districts in LA county to engage in friendly competition and demonstrate their love and understanding of mathematics.

The day began with excitement and anticipation as students prepared for the two competition rounds. The first, the Conceptual Understanding Round, challenged participants with one complex performance task with multiple parts. The second, the Sense Making (Problem-Solving) Round, provided another multifaceted performance task designed to test the students' problem-solving skills. Each round lasted 40 minutes and tested the students' conceptual and practical understanding of mathematics.

As the rounds came to a close, the festivities did not end there; Math Field Day continued with the vibrant MATHCHELLA and STEM Fair events. These segments allowed students and faculty to participate and engage with puzzles, robotics, spoke with STEM professionals such as Khali Cannad, Aerospace Engineer from Northrup Grumman, explored games and problem-solved through challenges, further immersing themselves in the world of mathematics. Numerous booths exhibited how mathematics is applied in real-world scenarios, illustrating its significance in various fields and careers.

As the competition came to a close, the winning teams were awarded bronze, silver, and gold medals. Overall top scoring LEAs received a trophy along with their coach, celebrating their hard-earned success. (Ruben Valles handed out the Gold medals.) Every scholar received beautiful medals for participation, each team member competed in their LEAs to get to the LA County Math Field Day.
