Be A Judge for History Day L.A.

Tue Feb 13 16:34:00 PST 2024

Volunteer as a judge and support the hundreds of students across L.A. County participating in History Day L.A.

Hundreds of students from across L.A County will come together at San Gabriel High School on Saturday, March 2, 2024, to present their historical findings for review and assessment. Judges play a vital role in this process.

History Day LA helps students with their academic development and develop essential life skills such as time management, teamwork and public speaking. The program fosters a passion for history and encourages students to see the connections between the past and the present. History Day LA provides a platform for 4-12 grade students to become historians and share their insights with a wider audience.

Students are encouraged to choose a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary and secondary research. They can then present their work in one of five ways: as a paper, exhibit, performance, documentary, or website on their selected historical theme. Winners from all categories are invited to compete at the state level; state winners proceed to compete at the National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Volunteering as a judge can be very rewarding. The enthusiasm of the students is infectious, and their knowledge is remarkable. To participate as a judge, deep knowledge of history is not required; the students will teach you! LACOE’s History-Social Science team will provide training to community members interested in volunteering. The students of Los Angeles County will reap the benefits of your time and careful attention in an arena where the student is the expert!

Educators, parents and community members should be involved in History Day LA to support our students in their academic and personal growth, foster a love for learning and prepare them for success in future endeavors.
