Operation Graduation is more than a commencement — it is a powerful reminder of what is possible when students are given the chance to succeed.

In a powerful and moving celebration of perseverance and hope, more than 70 students from Los Angeles County’s juvenile halls, probation camps and county community schools received their high school diplomas during Operation Graduation. The ceremony was held at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall yesterday.

Families, educators, civic leaders, and dignitaries filled the concert hall to celebrate the students’ extraordinary journeys, each one marked by determination, personal growth and a belief in second chances.

Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo delivered heartfelt remarks, emphasizing the strength of students who have overcome significant obstacles.

“Our graduates have faced adversity with courage and emerged stronger,” said Dr. Duardo. “They’ve earned this moment through perseverance and hope, and they remind us of the transformative power of education.”

The evening featured musical and dance performances, a keynote address by acclaimed actor Steven Norfleet and inspiring student voices.

One student speaker movingly shared, “The greatest gift any student can receive is support. I’m thankful for my teachers and my family. As we move forward, let us also remember that not everyone has the same level of support. Be kind. Be understanding.”

Several scholarships were awarded during the ceremony in recognition of academic achievement, leadership and resilience:

  • The Los Angeles County Probation Department presented two students with the Paul Higa Memorial Scholarship and the Education Services Scholarship.

  • The Association of Los Angeles County Office School Administrators (ALACOSA) presented the Every Student Succeeds Scholarship Award.

  • The African American Heritage Committee awarded scholarships to students, honoring their commitment to excellence and personal growth.

Operation Graduation is more than a commencement — it is a powerful reminder of what is possible when students are given the chance to succeed, and when educators and communities believe in them.
