LACOE is excited to recognize two outstanding champions of student success — Melissa Gillespie and Dr. Maria Ruelas — as the 2025 L.A. County School Counselor and School Social Worker of the Year!
We are proud to announce the 2025 recipients of the Los Angeles County School Counselor and School Social Worker of the Year awards as Melissa Gillespie of Bay Laurel Elementary School in the Las Virgenes Unified School District and Dr. Maria Ruelas of Lawndale Elementary School District, respectively.
Melissa Gillespie is celebrated for her exceptional leadership, innovation and commitment to student well-being. She currently serves as the school counselor at Bay Laurel Elementary School and as the Elementary Counseling Chair for Las Virgenes Unified School District, where she leads a team of nine full-time counselors and champions equitable, data-driven supports for all students. With over a decade of experience, Melissa has designed and implemented comprehensive counseling programs aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. She is known for her expertise in trauma-informed practices, resilience programming and grief support, and she continues to elevate the profession through state-level leadership roles.
"I am so grateful to be chosen as the LACOE School Counselor of the Year and to represent each and every one of my current and former students who have trusted me with their hearts and stories," said Melissa. "As a solo counselor at Bay Laurel, the hard work is worth it to know I have the best job on campus spreading joy, creating connections and building a comprehensive school counseling program from the ground up!"
Dr. Maria Ruelas is being recognized for her unwavering commitment, innovation and dedication to students, families and the broader school community. Currently serving as District Social Worker for the Lawndale Elementary School District, she is a mentor, advocate and leader. Dr. Ruelas engages students and families through the district’s Mentorship Program, promotes social justice and educational equity through systems-level initiatives and oversees the district’s Intern Program for graduate-level students. A published author and past state award recipient, she continues to advance the field through scholarship, leadership and practice.
“I'm truly humbled to receive the LACOE Social Worker of the Year, and I’m grateful to my colleagues for standing with me since 2013," said Maria. "As the first social worker in Lawndale, I’m proud to have helped pave the way for a social worker at every school, supported by a districtwide team of interns who strengthen services at each site. My promise is to keep removing systemic barriers so every student, no matter their story, feels safe, seen and supported to thrive.”
“Our school counselors and social workers play a vital role in ensuring every child has the support they need to thrive,” said Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo. “Melissa and Maria exemplify the heart, skill and dedication it takes to meet students where they are and guide them toward brighter futures. Their work strengthens not only their schools, but our communities across Los Angeles County.”
Both honorees were nominated by their peers for their unwavering dedication and impact on students and their districts. Final selections were made by a committee of student support service practitioners specializing in school counseling and student mental health.
