This prestigious award celebrates exceptional teachers who inspire, challenge and uplift students while making a lasting impact in their school communities.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond today announced the 2026 California Teachers of the Year, honoring five outstanding educators across the state. Among them are two remarkable Los Angeles County teachers: Rene Romero of Covina-Valley Unified School District and Heather Povinelli of Monrovia Unified School District.

This prestigious award celebrates exceptional teachers who inspire, challenge and uplift students while making a lasting impact in their school communities.

Rene and Heather exemplify the extraordinary dedication of educators across Los Angeles County. Their passion, creativity and commitment to students are truly inspiring. We are proud to see them recognized at the state level and thank them for the incredible difference they make in the lives of children and families every day,” said Dr. Debra Duardo, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools.

Rene Romero is an 11th and 12th grade International Baccalaureate Language and Literature teacher at South Hills High School. He uses his own background as an English Learner from East Los Angeles to make sure that his classroom is an inclusive and supportive environment. He works to ensure that every child feels supported to take on new challenges, develop their voice, and thrive.

Heather Povinelli is a second-grade teacher at Bradoaks Elementary Science Academy. As someone who has dwarfism, Dr. Povinelli uses her own disability as an opportunity to teach students about inclusion, equity and belief in oneself. Through her doctoral research, Dr. Povinelli has highlighted specific strategies and practices used by dwarf teachers that can be applied by any teacher to more effectively reach every child.
