Alana Elliott of Monrovia Unified and Denise Ledesma of San Gabriel Unified are recognized for their work supporting students and families across Los Angeles County.
The Los Angeles County Office of Education has named Alana Elliott its 2026 School Counselor of the Year and Denise Ledesma its 2026 School Social Worker of the Year. Both were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of student support professionals.
“School counselors and social workers make a profound difference in students’ lives, often in ways that reach well beyond the classroom,” said Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debra Duardo. “The admiration Alana and Denise have earned from their school communities speaks to the care they bring to students and families, and I’m proud to celebrate their work.”
Alana Elliott: School Counselor of the Year
As a transitional kindergarten through sixth grade counselor in Monrovia Unified School District, Elliott supports students through individual and small group counseling, classroom lessons and a student leadership program. She also organizes family engagement events and works with school staff to identify needs across the school community.
One of the district’s first elementary counselors assigned full time to a single school, Elliott has helped make counseling support more consistent and accessible for students. She is a finalist for the California Association of School Counselors’ 2027 School Counselor of the Year award and serves as a CASC School Counselor Emerging Leader.
“My goal as an elementary counselor is always to ensure every student feels seen, heard and supported in their development,” Elliott said.
Denise Ledesma: School Social Worker of the Year
Ledesma has spent more than 15 years supporting students and families, including the past decade as San Gabriel Unified School District’s sole district social worker. Her work includes helping students experiencing homelessness and students in foster care connect with resources and support.
She also serves as community schools coordinator at Del Mar High School. Through partnerships with community organizations, Ledesma has helped establish a school wellness center and a districtwide food pantry. She mentors future social workers by supervising practicum students and serving on advisory boards at USC and Cal State Los Angeles.
“I am extremely grateful to be able to work alongside dedicated colleagues, families and community partners who share a commitment to helping our students succeed,” Ledesma said.
LACOE’s Mental Health and School Counseling Unit administers the awards program and provides consultation, coaching, professional development and other support to schools. Elliott and Ledesma will be honored at an awards banquet Nov. 3, 2026.
