Through the Department of Justice (DOJ) Tobacco Grant, LACOE provides professional learning to School Resource Officers (SROs) and school staff to support districts and schools in order to facilitate the development of quality tobacco-use prevention, intervention, and enforcement strategies. LACOE serves as a resource to schools and districts by conducting workshops, trainings, presentations, and meetings free of charge to districts and schools in the Los Angeles County area.
GOALS:
- Build capacity of school Security Resource Officers (SROs) by providing professional development addressing best practices and procedures, new and emerging information on devices, proper disposal, and successful enforcement of school tobacco-policies.
- Provide professional training opportunities for school staff and SROs on the latest research, preventive curricula, intervention services, current trends of tobacco products and usage, and youth engagement.
- Facilitate successful collaboration and coalition building among Department of Justice-Tobacco Grant Program grantees in Los Angeles County.

Lead and participate in activities that involve the implementation of tobacco/vape-use prevention, intervention, and enforcement services.
Provide leadership to districts and schools in planning and implementing model policies and practices related to tobacco and vaping to provide effective presentations on dangers of youth tobacco/vape-use.
Provide districts and schools with professional development on best practice strategies for intervention, counseling, and social services for students with an aim of promoting resiliency, emotional wellness, and deterrence for tobacco/vape-use.
Promote evidence-based and promising practice strategies to reduce and overcome barriers to youth health.
Collaborate with LEAs in providing parent and community engagement strategies related to mental health, communication, and tobacco/vape-use factors affecting learning.
Assist districts and schools with educational programs to include instructional planning, student intervention practices, evaluation of student performance, and evaluation of overall program effectiveness.
Collaborate with public health, behavioral health, and community-based organizations regarding education, engagement, and enforcement related to tobacco and vaping.
Assist schools with design, coordination, and implementation of professional development, content standards teams, regional meetings, and coaching.
Facilitate stakeholder meetings, presentations, and trainings
Connect districts and schools with community resources to address student and family needs.
Engage in problem solving, with school staff.
