Through the Department of Justice (DOJ) Tobacco Grant, LACOE provides professional learning to School Resource Officers (SROs) and school staff to support districts and schools in order to facilitate the development of quality tobacco-use prevention, intervention, and enforcement strategies. LACOE serves as a resource to schools and districts by conducting workshops, trainings, presentations, and meetings free of charge to districts and schools in the Los Angeles County area.

GOALS:

  1. Build capacity of school staff by in schools by providing professional trainings on best practices and procedures for analysis of electronic-cigarettes/vapes, disposal of devices, knowledge and skills on the latest research, preventative curricula, intervention services, current trends of tobacco products and usage, and youth engagement modules to prevent or reduce youth tobacco/vape-use.
  2. Conduct parent and student awareness presentations on the dangers of youth tobacco/vape use, provide research-validated information, and support.
  3. Facilitate successful collaboration and coalition building among Department of Justice- Tobacco Grant Program grantees in Los Angeles County with a purpose of sharing best practices and resources to address the youth tobacco-use and current vaping epidemic.
  4. Provide schools with suggested guidance for safe storage, handling and proper disposing of electronic cigarettes/vape devices along with distributing sample electronic disposal kits.
