The Los Angeles County Office of Education's Vision Services aims to provide students with visual impairments the necessary and appropriate specialized access support, which enables educational participation and facilitates the achievement of academic, developmental, social and life skill competencies. Our staff is committed to providing quality service to district/county stakeholders, students and parents.
Our program consists of two major service areas:
- Vision services and Orientation and Mobility services provided by a teacher for the visually impaired.
- Braille/Large Print production services provided by qualified Braille transcribers and support staff.
Depending on eligibility and need, a student with a visual impairment may be provided with services of a credentialed teacher of the visually impaired (TVI)
including:
- Direct instruction in special skills (e.g. Braille, tactile representation, optical low vision aids, etc.)
- The use of specialized equipment
- Adaptations to the curriculum or regular classroom teaching methods to provide access support which enables the visually impaired student to interact with the expected instructional program. This specialized access support, without direct instruction, constitutes VI service as long as these service functions need to be provided on a regular, ongoing basis to support the vision-related needs of the VI student.
The LACOE Vision Services Unit provides Braille and large printbmedia for all SELPAs andbcontracted districts we serve.
We maintain a working library that consists of an inventory of over 7,000 textbooks and novels.
We have the ability to create Braille and large print media in house, which saves our SELPAs and districts from having to purchase adapted books on the open market.
With the adapted media we create, we are able to save and share these materials with the SELPAs and districts we serve. This proves to be very cost effective in the long run.
O and M is a service that teaches people who are blind and visuallyn impaired to navigate their environment safely and independently.
In the school setting, this may include:
- Locating classrooms, library, cafeteria and other pertinent areas of campus
- Traveling outside school in residential or business areas
- Crossing Streets
- Using public transportation
- Accessing community locations (e.g. grocery store, post office, public library, etc.)
