Dotti Ysais was recently honored with the 2025 LA Suicide Prevention Network Hero Award for Innovation

Dotti Ann Ysais, Project Director III at the Center for Distance and Online Learning within LACOE’s Curriculum and Instructional Services division, has been recognized with the 2025 Hero Award for Innovation by the Los Angeles Suicide Prevention Network.

The award honors individuals and organizations in the greater Los Angeles area who have implemented innovative suicide prevention efforts and strategies. Recipients are selected for their creative approaches, including technology-driven solutions, direct efforts to address inequities in communities, responses to emerging issues, and the use of new methods of communication.

With nearly 25 years at LACOE, Dotti has led the Center for Distance and Online Learning (CDOL) in providing blended and online professional development across Los Angeles County, emphasizing Technology Enhanced Arts Learning (TEAL) and integrating arts education with culturally inclusive activities to support student achievement. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she and her team played a vital role in helping 80 school districts transition to online learning, fostering collaboration and a supportive environment focused on empowering both district staff and students.

Dotti’s leadership in suicide prevention began more than a decade ago. In 2012, she spearheaded the launch of the Suicide Prevention Ongoing Resiliency Training (SPORT) Project through the Region 12 Student Mental Health Initiative, funded by the Mental Health Services Act of 2004 (Proposition 63). The SPORT Project built on local strategies and statewide activities focused on preventing student mental health issues, particularly at the elementary level (K-8), with important linkages to grades 9–12. For the past 12 years, Dotti has continued to guide this work, strengthening resources, reducing stigma and fostering communitywide support systems.

Dotti’s dedication to suicide prevention and mental health awareness exemplifies the spirit of the award. Her commitment and innovative spirit continue to inspire colleagues and strengthen efforts toward hope, recovery, and wellbeing across Los Angeles County.

Congratulations to Dotti Ysais for this well-deserved recognition.
