One Los Angeles County Educator Named 2027 California Teachers of the Year

This prestigious State award celebrates exceptional teachers who inspire, challenge and uplift students while making a lasting impact in their school communities.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond today announced the 2027 California Teachers of the Year, honoring five outstanding educators across the State. Among them is one exceptional Los Angeles County teacher: Gagik Galfayan of the Glendale Unified School District.

This prestigious award, presented by the California Department of Education, celebrates exceptional teachers who inspire, challenge and uplift students while making a lasting impact in their school communities.

Gagik Galfayan brings history to life for 7th- and 8th-grade students at Woodrow Wilson Middle School, encouraging them to see how the past shapes the present. In addition to teaching, he chronicles the school’s story as advisor of the yearbook program.

2027 California Teachers of the Year Finalists

Additionally, congratulations to the 2027 California Teachers of the Year Finalists from Los Angeles County:  

Kareli Rodriguez, a fifth-grade multiple-subject Spanish dual immersion teacher from Stoner Avenue Elementary School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
