NOTE: WEBPAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) supports educators to proactively design an inclusive ecosystem that removes barriers and foster belonging, ensuring equally high outcomes for all students. Guided by our vision of Empowered Students, Thriving Communities, we place students at the center of every decision while advancing wellbeing, building strong partnerships, strengthening communication, and pursuing operational excellence.

The Learning Acceleration and Academic Support (LAAS) unit supports educators (LEA/site leaders, coaches, and classroom teachers) to implement a system-wide, whole child approach through evidence-based professional learning that sustains improved access to inclusive, equitable, high quality education for all students.

“Learning acceleration is a system-wide approach that strategically tackles unfinished learning using a whole-child approach. This includes using formative data, a deep understanding of learning progressions and a relational approach to accelerate learning. Students engaged in acceleration access a laser-focused, high-quality, and rich learning experience by moving students forward and setting them up for success with just-in-time training on required foundational skills. An acceleration approach, in essence, is about building bridges rather than filling holes.”-CCEE’s Playbook for Accelerating Learning.

What We Offer

The LAAS team offers universal and customized professional learning, coaching and technical/adaptive assistance to Local Educational Agencies (LEAs). Universal supports are available to all educators while customized supports provide personalized services tailored to the unique needs of LEAs on a fee-for-service basis.

Our work is grounded in the California MTSS Framework (CA MTSS) with a focus on strengthening Tier 1 system design to better support access, engagement and success for all learners. We primarily leverage Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as both a foundational and integrative approach that connects and strengthens the main components of learning acceleration. We also partner with LEAs to determine priorities not fully addressed through our existing offerings and can provide customized support to address gaps and strengthen coherent systems for learning acceleration.

Inclusive Learning by Design

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

inclusive learning by design

The Learning Acceleration and Academic Support Unit leverages the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework embedded within the California multi-tiered system of support (CA MTSS) to integrate social-emotional learning (SEL), culturally sustaining pedagogy, priority content, and evidence-based strategies.

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework supports educators in universally designing learning experiences that are inclusive and promote student agency - all while maintaining rigor and grade-level expectations.

By applying the UDL framework in practical and intentional ways, educators who partner with us create the conditions for equitable instruction for all learners.

Our approach is grounded in the California State Standards and the evidence-based practices developed by CAST, Inc., the originators of the UDL framework.
