ED Buzz: Esports on the Rise

Esports programs are expanding, with school districts setting up their own programs nationwide. In this episode, Dr. Chris Hoang, LACOE’s Interim Assistant Director of Technology Innovation and Outreach, and Alvaro Brito, STEAM Administrator with the Compton Unified School District, shares their expertise on the rise of esports. They discuss how it can affect socio-emotional learning and how playing video games can help build skills for future careers.

LA Unified Esports Coaches Handbook

Check out LAUSD new Esports policy that provides general guidelines for esports programs at school sites. Esports stands for electronic sports. This policy addresses the process and requirements for implementing an esports program before, during, and after school. A well-implemented esports program delivers well-rounded, inspiring educational and enrichment experiences, keeps students engaged, promotes joy and learning, and builds a variety of critical skills for world readiness.

Leveling up Learning with Scholastic Esports in LA County

Our findings concluded that there were many roadblocks for schools to implement esports in their curriculum with funding and lack of knowledge being the biggest two. Taking these in mind, we had designed policy solutions that would help LACOE assist schools with esports implementation. We had designed our policy solution with two ideas in mind; short-term solutions and long term solutions.
